Tour Overview

The Alta Pusteria valley, on the northern edge of the Dolomites, is an ideal destination for a snowshoeing adventure with routes leading into Fanes-Sennes Natural Park, along the shoreline of Lago di Braies and beneath the jagged peaks of Tre Cime di Lavaredo. We’ll trek along forest trails and old military tracks to the magnificent viewpoints of Durrakopf and Strudelkopf, learning more about the impact of the First World War here along the way. Our base for the week is Hotel Adler, one of the best hotels we feature in our entire programme. It’s a four-star stay in the centre of Villabassa, a charming village, and provides the perfect place to unwind after a day of snowshoeing, with Michelin-approved cuisine and a relaxing wellness centre.

Accommodation

Considered the best in town, this four-star retreat has a privileged address on the village square. Rooms are traditional yet stylish and come with Hästens beds, each of which is created with natural materials.

The hotel itself is run by the Pircher family but began life as the home of nobleman Stefan von Kurz zum Thurn more than 400 years ago. You can see plenty of that heritage throughout the property.

The hub of social living will likely be the bar and fireplace room, where you can sip an aperitivo or perhaps a post-dinner gin and tonic, while enjoying the relaxed hubbub with the group (a local crowd often gathers here too). There’s also a good-sized pool for morning dips and a wellness centre with a sauna, steam room, solarium and small fitness centre.

Exodus special offer

For even more comfort, Hotel Adler offers upgrades for a special price, exclusive to Exodus travellers. There are various room types from which you can choose. Contact us for prices and availability.

Worth knowing

There are a limited number of double rooms for single use available for a supplement.

The accommodation shown has been booked and agreed in advance; however, we may need to make changes to a property of similar or higher standard after you have booked. We endeavour to inform you of any changes in advance; this could, on rare occasions, be at late notice.

The Hotel Adler does not cater for vegans

Food

Seven breakfasts, five lunches and six dinners are included, one of which will be an authentic Tyrolean gourmet dinner

Dinners are usually taken in the hotel restaurant, where we enjoy a lovely set menu. Please note, the meal on the evening of Day 1 may be a cold buffet instead of a hot meal.

Dinner is not included on the free day, which may be an excellent opportunity to try the à la carte menu on offer at the hotel or a local pizzeria recommended by your leader. Vegetarians are catered for; however, as this area is renowned for its meats, please be aware there may not be as much variety.

Five pack lunches are provided by the hotel. Each morning there is a small buffet with items to make your own lunch (eg cured meat/ham, cheeses, boiled eggs, tomato, cakes, fruit etc). To reduce the use of plastic and single-use items, the hotel provides reusable cutlery and a paper bag.

Reviews from travellers on this tour

A fantastic week

We did this trip four years ago and enjoyed it so much decided to book again. Was a little worried it would not be so good second time around, but it was even better! We had a fantastic week with varied and interesting walks in stunning scenery. Magical Narnia like landscapes, mountain peaks with historic interest and the most incredible views. An outstanding leader who made every day interesting and fun and a hotel, with excellent food, service and facilities to relax in after a days snowshoeing.

Extraordinary landscapes and fabulous snowshoeing.

Loved the snowshoeing. Each of the walks held interest and the challenges increased as the week progressed. We enjoyed the opportunity to sled down from Taistner Alm near Lutterkopf. Hotel Adler is wonderful with a lovely spa, fabulous 4 course dinners, picnic packed lunches and extensive breakfast buffet.

Snowshoeing in the Dolomites

A wonderful challenging holiday spent among jagged snow capped peaks, led by a knowledgable, caring guide, with a great sense of fun.

Great snowshoeing in stunning scenery

Great variety of walks to mountain summits with fantastic views of the beautiful Dolomite scenery. Walking included a couple of ascents of 650m. We walked through wooded hillsides to mountain tops. On most days we stopped in mountain huts for a drink whilst we admired the scenery.

Snowshoeing in the Dolomites

Mostly walking as January had been too cold for snow

Just as good the 2nd Time

This is the 2nd time I've done this trip, last time was only 12 months ago. I pleased to say I had a fantastic time this time around as well. There were issues with the flight out due to bad weather, so nothing Exodus could have down about that. But they did re arrange the pick up from the airport, and kept us informed informed of what was going on, so top marks for their effort there. The hotel is very good, the dinner is filling, if sometimes a little unusual. I think a would have preferred a simpler menu. The rooms seem to vary greatly. Last year I had one of the superb rooms that you'll see on the hotels website, this year I had a room towards the rear of the hotel that was more traditional Tirol style, that was clean but a little tired, specially when compared to the other rooms. However it was more than adequate, after all you don't come here to sit in your room, you come for the great walking, and you get that in abundance. The walks are well paced , and gradually increase in difficulty as the week progresses. The views were fantastic, there was plenty of time to admire the view, take photos, and stop in the mountains huts for a hot chocolate or something stronger. There wasn't enough deep snow to make it worth taking the snow shoes, so we were supplies with crampons, which worked well. On the Friday there was plenty of deep snow, which great fun. Even if I did face plant a few times. There was plenty of advice and ideas on what to to do the "rest day" and the free travel pass was very helpful here and on the day of the departure when you have the morning to entertain yourself.

SNOWSHOEING IN THE DOLOMITES

A great way to visit mountains in winter, visiting places that can't be reached any other way. A comfortable hotel with a good recovery suite - sauna, steam, pool with massage jets.

Wonderful experience

Overall it was an outstanding experience. We got to challenge ourselves while in the hands of an extremely good guide, who kept us safe. The Dolomites are truly amazing.

Snowshoeing in the Dolomites

A fun filled trip in a stunning part of Europe with excellent guides who made the most of the limited snow we experienced. Combining scenery, history, sightseeing and relaxing in the wellness centre, it was a lovely Christmas break.

Tirolean snow and snowshoes!

A very fine mix of wild, high mountains and very civilised relaxation in the valley. The Hotel Adler serves excellent food - real winter sport breakfasts, freshly done egg and bacon if you want. Being in the village, the shops are right next door for souvenirs etc. Having a week's free travel pass made rest days etc so much easier to get around.
